Transform Your Space

We recently completed a project in Akron that transformed an aging, unsafe entry into a safer, easier, and beautifully welcoming approach for an older couple who wanted to stay in their home with confidence and comfort. From assessment to final walkthrough, our goal was simple: create an entry that looks great and makes daily life easier.

Understanding the needs

The homeowners had a narrow, steep set of concrete steps that were difficult to navigate and became especially hazardous in winter. After a thorough assessment we prioritized low risers, deeper treads, a generous landing, and improved drainage and lighting. Accessibility and long-term durability guided every decision in the project.

Design choices that matter

For this job we focused on a cohesive hardscape design and build that blended safety with curb appeal. We selected high-traction pavers with subtle texture and warm tones to match the house. The new layout included a wide landing at the top and a mid-level landing to break the run of steps, giving the couple places to pause without feeling cramped. Strategic lighting and a sturdy handrail were included to increase visibility and confidence after dark.

How we built it

The build began with careful demolition and regrading to ensure proper slope and drainage. A compacted stone base was installed for long-term stability, followed by precise placement of pavers for consistent riser heights and comfortable tread depth. We installed a larger landing area using the same materials so transitions feel seamless. Throughout the process we coordinated with experienced paver walkway installers to ensure tight joints and professional edging that prevents shifting over time.

Safety upgrades

Key safety improvements included lower riser heights and wider treads for easier foot placement, slip-resistant paver surfaces, continuous handrails on the approach, and integrated step lighting to define each edge at night. We also adjusted the slope at the entry to reduce water pooling and prevent ice buildup in winter.

The result: easier to use, beautiful to look at

The couple was thrilled—they told us the new entry feels effortless and looks like it was always meant to be part of their home. Neighbors noticed the updated appearance, and the homeowners enjoy the confidence of a thoughtful layout that supports aging in place. The combination of function and form shows how practical upgrades can also be an aesthetic improvement.
